WHY DO FRENCHIES COST SO MUCH??
So many times I am asked why are French bulldogs so expensive and why is every breeders prices different????
First off breeders will price their puppies by color, quality and bloodline. We spend years perfecting our own lines and put blood sweat and tears into our precious babies. Not much thought by a buyer is put into the process it takes to produce that little bundle of wrinkles you take home to love. The countless months we spend raising, caring for loving our mamas to be. The vet care and testing we submit prior to even considering the mom as a potential dam for our breeding program. So many times the DNA health panel or x rays cut a female from breeding and we have spent a year or more raising her only to have the disappointment that she won’t continue on our dreams and bloodline.
Then it’s the exciting time we are close to her first breeding. This is when the spending of time and money begins. A stud is selected with huge thought and consideration as to what will compliment her and her health testing to make the best looking healthiest French bulldog babies. Once the stud is selected and her heat begins the testing By countless progesterone tests begins. Yay it is breeding day what method will be used natural (so rare and not always possible when the stud doesn’t live close by or even in the country) so that method is arranged shipping or travel planned to execute the breeding. Artificial insemination, Transcervical insemination or surgical implant is selected. She is bred yay now comes the supplements and top quality diet. Here we are almost due day. Reverse progesterone may be required to pin point when those babies are fully ready to be born. C section is 99% the safest method to deliver those big headed wide shoulder babies. Now it’s time to supplement mom with calcium rich food and supplements and pray eclampsia and or mastitis doesn’t hit. We monitor every feeding keeping babies in a warming bin for at least 2 weeks so no drafts cause them to fade. We sit there every 2 hours for weeks making sure no one aspirated and everyone has a full tummy and doesn’t get pushed off by a larger sibling. Then we hand wean onto top quality food, making sure everyone again doesn’t choke or aspirate and has a nice full tummy, a process that is every 4 hours until 6-7 weeks old. During this time of non stop feedings no sleep major laundry (they can be poopy little stinkers) we field countless messages and inquiries to find these babies the best 5 homes. Here we are finally 8 weeks and it’s time to let our babies go home. Puppy packs with toys, blanket, food to transition, health guarantee, and contract. We meet expectant families and cry as we know they will carry on to amazing homes.
Now to breakdown the costs of our amazing passion, hobby and life
Dam purchase average $6500 as high as $40000 for DNA and bloodline (for this example I am going low end $6500)
Stud Fee $2000-10000 or pick puppy (for this example I am using the average fee I have experienced at $4000)
Health testing $120-3000 (health panel and OFA) (for this example I am bare minimum health panel and color DNA $400)
Progesterone's 1+ $100 each average 3-6 needed per breeding (for this example I used the low end average of 3 tests I’ve personally experienced the need of 20 tests to achieve a litter)
Ai, TCI, or surgical $120-500 (for this example I used 3 ai breeding's for $360)
Ultrasound to confirm pregnancy $120 (for this example I used $120 sometimes 2 are required as it’s hard to see pups)
Supplements and food for pregnancy $500 (for this example I used this amount)
Reverse progesterone 1+ needed $100 each (for this example I used this amount)
C section $900-1500 (for this example I used the average $1200)
Food for puppies and mom $600 (for this example I used this amount)
Health checks $600 (for this example I used this amount)
Puppy packages $600 (for this example I used this amount)
This doesn’t include antibiotics or medications needed for issues that could arise (mastitis, eclampsia, pneumonia in puppies, ear infections etc)
This doesn’t include the equipment a professional breeder has for care, heat pads, incubators, air concentrators, nebulizers nor do I compensate this example with the electric costs utility wise for the heat pads, oxygen, incubators, nebulizers, laundry etc.
So for an average litter of 4 a breeder has incurred the cost of $15880 before any profit is said to be had (broken down for 4 puppies $3965 each baby)
This total is based off the minimum range or average cost and can very easily be higher. And we hear every day why do you charge so much.... I can get a puppy
For $2500 or less.
I barely if ever make $1 per hour to raise a litter of puppies from start to finish. This is the furthest get rich quick scheme. It truly eats me to the core when people think this is easy money or we charge far too much. My brain never stops worrying about those babies in their first days home, the joy I get when I see those smiles and update pics and the best is hearing from families for years with the thanks for enriching their families and lives with their amazing dog from you. This is why I do this.... not for the money that gets put right back into my investment and any profit into the dogs to feed, vet and keep growing my passion.
Just a little food for thought for those that truly question the prices put on a French bulldog and a little insight into the breeding process as a whole.
To those that have read this to the end thank you and I hope you find or already have your little baby Frenchie and are a happy family.
